Our expertise

In a sector too often defined by generalities and overstatements, we are among the few who deliver precisely what is promised.

With team members positioned in key countries across the world, our local knowledge, contacts, perspectives and response capabilities are genuinely global. Our colleagues bring together expertise drawn from military, security and intelligence services, alongside commercial and political backgrounds. Every service we offer is actively directed and delivered by senior personnel whose specialist skills have been shaped in some of the most delicate, demanding and hostile environments imaginable.

Supported by a close network of trusted associates, our business model combines the agility and energy of a boutique consultancy with the resources and reach of a far larger organisation.

Case Studies

Crux Risk combines the reach and resources of a large organisation with the agility and personal attention of a specialist consultancy. Every engagement is led by senior practitioners with skills earned in genuinely demanding circumstances.

Maritime and Land-Based Kidnap

A cargo vessel and her 15-strong crew were hijacked while transiting the Somali basin. Following negotiation, the vessel was released with 8 crew members, but the remaining 7 were taken ashore and held in appalling conditions – with no sponsor and no resolution in sight. They became the longest-held maritime piracy captives in recent times.

A group of marine industry leaders eventually came together and instructed Crux Risk to lead their release. Using our own people and political contacts in Somalia and Kenya, we brokered a deal, extracted the men by aircraft into Kenya, and managed their medical care and repatriation home.

Unlawful Detention

A senior employee of a European company’s Far East subsidiary was detained, his passport confiscated and his movements restricted. No formal charges were brought, but the company was subjected to extortion payments. Despite repeated legal efforts, the situation remained deadlocked.

Crux Risk was instructed to develop a way forward. Drawing on regional experience and local contacts, we presented three viable options. One was adopted, negotiations concluded successfully, and the individual was released and returned to Europe.

Expert Opinion

An international maritime law firm, acting for a Lloyd’s underwriter, instructed Crux Risk to review case files for a maritime piracy insurance claim suspected to be erroneous or fraudulent.

Drawing on extensive front-line experience, we reviewed the files, logs and transcripts – and were able to both assess the validity of the claim and provide authoritative commentary on the actions of the responder.

Reputation Management Review

A leading financial sector company instructed Crux to conduct a Reputation Management Review, recognising that reputational damage ranks among the industry’s foremost concerns. They wanted to better understand its implications in the context of crisis, identify vulnerabilities, and build greater resilience.

Our Head of Reputation led the review, with the team identifying not only areas for improvement but opportunities the company had yet to capitalise on.
